Richmond - The RCMP in Richmond, British Columbia issued the warning after four young men complained of being blackmailed after exposing themselves on webcams.
The warning was issued yesterday by the RCMP detachment in Richmond. During the last month, the RCMP received four complaints from young men about being extorted online.
In each case, the men, who ranged in age from 15 to 20, were chatting with whom they believed was a woman in a foreign country. During these chat conversations, they were talked into exposing themselves on their webcams.
According to Cpl. Stephanie Ashton, "Within hours of doing that they are then asked for money, up to $3,000 via Western Union, to stop the person from taking the videos of them exposing themselves and sending it to all their friends on Facebook." The RCMP investigation revealed the extortionists' Internet providers were located in foreign countries.
None of the four actually made a payment.
Rob Gordon, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University, described the scam as "extremely unusual." Internet scams such as this are usually perpetrated on the very young and older people, not those who are in their late teens or early twenties and usually more Internet savvy. Gordon also believes there are many others who have been victimized by the scam but have not reported it to police.
Ashton also said, "The biggest concern here is these young guys are doing this, putting themselves out on the Internet with no knowledge of where these videos and photos are going to go and who knows how many years from now it may come back to haunt them." The corporal mentioned these images may have repercussions in later years when the young men look for work or try to obtain a security clearance.
The RCMP is issuing a general warning to the public to be careful about who they chat with and be especially careful about what personal information they put out on the Internet.
