An IDF soldier was gunned down by a Palestinian sniper in the city of Hebron Sunday evening, while thousands of Israelis flock the area celabrating the Holiday of Succoth.
IDF Givati infantry Brigade Soldier Gavriel Kobi of Tirat Hacarmel was killed yesterday at the "Tut Atarek Junction" by a Palestinian sniper while on guard duty not far from the Tomb of the Patriarch in Hebron, as reported by The Jerusalem post. This was the second IDF fatality in Judea and Samaria within two days, as reported, both sparking heavy military activity by all Israeli defence agencies, as well as massive political response, mainly from the Israeli right.
According to Haaretz English online edition Staff Sergeant G. Kobi was shot in the upper part of his body by a sniper while patrolling the "Pharmacy" junction. He was evacuated in severe medical condition to Hadassah Ein Karem Medical center where he later died. Reinforced military teams closed the area since Sunday evening and throughout Monday in search of the perpetrator(s) with no clear outcome thus far.
According to "Haaretz news", tensions were and are on the rise following Gavriel Kobi's death in action, as well as the recent kidnapping and murder of 20 year old IDF soldier Tomer Hazan on Friday. Hazan, kidnapped by an acquaintance Palestinian named Nadal Amar and taken to Sanriya - a city near Qalqilyah, and then murdered, was found dead on Saturday in a joint operation by the Israeli Shin Bet internal security agency and the IDF, who were determined to prevent any successful soldier kidnapping and extortion/negotiation incident from occurring.
