article imageNFL Scores: Lions hold off Redskins 27-20

By Larry Seely     Sep 22, 2013 in Sports
The Detroit Lions held off a late charge from the Redskins and picked up their first ever win in the Nations Capitol on Sunday with a 27-20 victory over Washington.
After a slow start, Detroit starting quarterback Mathew Stafford heated up and finished the day completing 25 of 42 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns, but an early interception that was returned by DeAngelo Hall for a score had the Lions trailing early 7-0.
Joique Bell filled in nicely for the injured Reggie Bush and led Detroit with 63 yards and a score on the ground. The youngster also added four receptions for 69 yards to help the offense gain 448 total yards.
Calvin Johnson also had a big game with a team high seven receptions for 115 yards and a score, but Stafford shared the wealth, completing passes to eight different receivers.
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin vowed to run the ball more this week and the second year pro did scramble a bit more, but two turnovers in crucial situations hurt the teams chances of picking up the win. Griffin finished with 326 yards passing and another 37 yards on the ground, but the offense managed just one touchdown despite gaining 446 yards.
Detroit is now 2-1 and will look to take control of the NFC North when they travel to Green Bay next week. Washington is now 0-3 and will look to regroup when they face the Raiders next weekend in Oakland.
