In decades past, celebrities worked hard to remain discreet while attending rehab for drug and alcohol issues. It seems that a short stay in a posh treatment center such as the Betty Ford Clinic is almost a rite of passage now.
Some still choose to keep their addiction treatment private though, shocking the public when they discuss it post-rehab.
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Crediting friends and family for their support, Philip Seymour Hoffman released a statement about his time in rehab. The Oscar-winning actor attended rehabilitation in May for 10 days.
He struggled with drug and alcohol issues in the past, but had remained sober for nearly 23 years. The most recent relapse started with prescription pill abuse and led to snorting heroin. Hoffman is already back to work and confident in his continued sobriety.
Zac Efron
One of the most shocking celebrity rehab confessions is that of Zac Efron. The former Disney child star has maintained a busy career, starring in more than one movie set to release in 2014. Efron has struggled with use of both cocaine and ecstasy, according to sources.
Sources say that his drug use had reached an all-time high during filming of the movie Neighbors. In classic drug-addicted movie star fashion, Efron missed days of filming and exhibited issues of use openly.
In addition to being unreliable on set, Efron allegedly trashed a Las Vegas hotel room. TMZ states that he and a group of friends were on a "coke rager" at the MGM Grand and caused nearly $50K in damages.
Efron reportedly attended rehab for his addiction more than once. The first was in March for several weeks of outpatient therapy. He also completed a short stay in rehabilitation earlier in the year. The star’s representatives say that treatment was successful and Efron is doing well.
Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino
During a recent interview Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino spoke of his time in rehab for prescription narcotic abuse.
Sorrentino admitted that he first sought out prescription painkillers as a way to increase energy. He hoped that it would help him maintain his hectic schedule instead of relying on his previous habit of regular work outs.
Anyone who viewed the past five seasons of Jersey Shore could see that the entire crew drank alcohol. Sorrentino says the alcohol was not a problem for him and never mixed it with pain pills. He has also been accused of using cocaine, but denies the use of any other substances.
The 29- year-old reality star spent three weeks in a Utah rehab where he underwent detox and therapy. He describes the first painful days of treatment in an interview with MTV News. Sorrentino speaks about the disappointment he felt in himself for allowing the use to get so out of control. Though he has openly spoken about his drug abuse and treatment, some people are concerned that he will relapse.
