article imageVideo: Bus driver on mobile phone causes passenger outrage

Marbella - An inquiry has been launched in Spain after a passenger captured on video a bus driver, talking on his mobile phone while driving, on a busy Costa del Sol highway between Marbella and Fuengirola.
It is illegal in Spain, and probably most of the developed world, to speak on a mobile phone while driving, but particularly important when at the wheel of a public transport bus full of passengers.
As reported in the local English-language newspaper The Olive Press, passengers were reportedly "terrified" when a Portillo bus driver on the M220 route between Marbella and Fuengirola, took a call on his mobile phone.
The passengers said that the call lasted at least a minute, which put all their lives at risk. In the video above, the driver can clearly be seen taking his eyes off the road to end the call.
An estimated 57 percent of Spanish road traffic accidents in 2011 were caused by driver distraction, according to the World Health Organization.
The video above was taken by a British expat on the bus, who asks not to be named.
Referring to the recent horrific train crash in Santiago de Compostela where 79 people were killed by a distracted train driver, she said:
“After what happened in Galicia, surely drivers on public transportation should be held to a higher standard, let alone simply complying with the law?”
According to a spokesman for the Avanza group, they were not aware of any complaints until Olive Press informed them of the incident.
The spokesman said, “Now we have been informed, we will be opening an internal investigation and the company will be taking disciplinary action if considered appropriate.”
This goes to show the importance of the public getting involved, capturing incidents such as this one on camera and exposing the dangers.
