Honda will recall 405,000 vehicles over airbag glitch

By Lizz Riggs     Sep 20, 2013 in Technology
Honda Motor Co has announced that it will be recalling about 405,400 vehicles, including the Odyssey, in the United States and three other countries due to a glitch in computer chips used in the airbag system.
Honda will recall nearly 318,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from the model years 2003-2004 and about 56,000 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003 model year in the U.S. This recall was brought on by an increasing number of complaints over the last few months about airbag deployment in these vehicles.
These particular vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag system, which contain computer chips similar to those used in other manufacturers' vehicles that were recalled in the last year. No crashes have been reported to Honda related to this issue.
For this recall, an electrical noise filter will be installed adjacent to the SRS control unit, free of charge.
NBC news reports that "Honda had the second-largest number of vehicles covered by recalls in the U.S. in 2012, the fifth year in a row it was either first or second on that list. It is again near the top of the recall charts for 2013 due to airbag and other issues that included a recent service action to re-repair defective power window master switches that could short out and inadvertently cause a vehicle fire."
A statement from Honda's press release explains how owners of these vehicles should take action to fix the airbag system on their car:
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will be sent in late-Oct. 2013, and, at that time, owners of vehicles from the affected model years will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going on-line to and or by calling (800) 999-1009 for Honda owners or (800) 382-2238 for Acura owners, and selecting option 4.
