A 16-year-old football player from Brockton (New York) High School died Monday after being injured in a helmet-to-helmet hit during a game Friday night. Damon Janes, a junior who suffered the injuries, was a running back and defensive end.
According to maxpreps.com, Janes lost consciousness during the third quarter of the game against Portville. The teenager died at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
After the incident, blue, green and white ribbons were wrapped around trees near the school by families, friends and strangers. Twitter feeds at #PrayForDamon left wishes for the football player. A total of 8,300 people clicked "like" in support of Janes.
The boy’s parents expressed "gratitude for those who have supported and prayed for Damon and his family," according to a statement the two released.
The National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina reported 25 high school football players in the United States have died from injuries for the period between 2003-2013. That compares to 1.1 million high school football players who played football in 2012. A total of 4.2 million players at all levels, from high school to the NFL played football the same year.
According to Charles Specht of the Buffalo News, as reported in Bleacher Report, the tragedy was the second in a month for high school football. DeAntre Turman from Collegepark Creekside High in Georgia died during an August scrimmage. According to the article, Turman was a talented player. He suffered a broken neck and fractured cervical vertebra.
An education official said unless the local high school involved requests one, there is not likely to be an investigation of the incident involving Janes.
According to the Huffington Post, the game was cancelled after Janes collapsed on the field.
A statement from the school said it and the community were "devastated by the tragedy that occurred at the game last Friday night ... and we are grieving his loss. Damon was a smart, athletic and friendly young man." The statement also said the school was seeking to provide help and support to family and friends of Damon.
