Melk - Three police officers and one emergency worker were killed before the attacker barricaded himself in a farm house. The standoff is ongoing.
SWAT teams and police surrounded the farm in Melk, a city in Central Austria, where the suspect barricaded himself in.
According to the Interior Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck, "two policemen and the driver of an emergency rescue vehicle were killed overnight in the nearby town of Annaberg."
Another police officer was found dead in his patrol car this morning when the suspect carjacked the vehicle while attempting to resist arrest. Authorities suspect the officer was taken hostage as the suspect headed towards the hideout.
ABCNews reports the police used armored vehicles to recover the body of the dead officer from the car parked near the gunman's hideout.
The suspect is a 55-year-old man poacher.
According to The Independent, the suspect first shot the two policemen as they tried to arrest him in woodland in the province of Lower Austria near Vienna on Monday night.
The gunman's third victim was the emergency driver as he was trying to give first aid to his wounded colleagues.
A large section of the surrounding area has been cordoned off by police in armored vehicles.
So far, the police failed to make contact with the gunman, as relatives of the suspect have been brought in to help, BBC informs.
