article image'SNL' names Cecily Strong as new 'Weekend Update' anchor

New York - "Saturday Night Live" is getting ready to premiere its 39th season on September 28th with alumni Tina Fey returning to host and Arcade Fire serving as musical guest. There will also be a few noticeable changes - especially at the "Weekend Update" desk.
The show's creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, announced in an interview with The New York Times that Cecily Strong, a feature player who broke out in her first year last season, has been chosen to join Seth Myers at the "Weekend Update" desk as a new anchor.
He said of Strong:
"Cecily, from the first show, was right there. She exploded."
Strong, 29, made several appearances behind the "Weekend Update" desk last season as The Girl You Wished You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a party. As The Hollywood Reporter mentioned, she is also known for other characters including Girlfriends Talk Show co-host Kyra, and retail worker Dana who insults co-workers after an announcement that someone is about to be let go.
The plan for right now, according to Michaels' interview with The New York Times, is for Strong to host the segment with Myers. He said there is a possibility of Strong being the sole host later in the season, but maybe not. He wants Seth to stay on after he takes the Late Night show from Jimmy Fallon in February. He said it could work because Myers' version of Late Night will only tape shows Monday through Thursday. This would enable to Myers to continue to work on the show that gave him his break.
In addition to Strong's promotion, six new faces will be gracing the legendary stage, as reported by Deadline: Beck Bennett, Brooks Wheelan, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, and SNL writer Michael Patrick O'Brien. Tim Robinson, who was a featured player last season, is now going to be on the writing staff.
At the end of last season, favorites Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Jason Sudeikis left the show.
