Pontevedra - In a joint operation of the Spanish National Police, the American DEA, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Europol and France's tax authority, four members of the Canadian Hells Angels have been arrested with half a ton of cocaine.
According to the Interior Ministry, on Saturday Spanish National Police agents arrested four members of the Canadian Hells Angels in the province of Pontevedra in northern Spain. In addition, two other people who were part of their organization and based in Spain were also arrested.
500 kilograms of cocaine had been transported from Colombia in a yacht to the Galician coast by one of the members of the group.
Thanks to research by international authorities, police managed to identify one of the group, whose role was to ensure that the cocaine was transported from South America to Spain, and then delivered to members of other organized groups in the country, also linked to the Hells Angels. These in turn had the infrastructure necessary to conceal the goods in warehouses until further distribution.
One of the men who met the yacht from Colombia was a "known member" of the San Diego chapter of the Hells Angels and another had been under investigation for suspected drug smuggling by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for some time, according to the Interior Ministry.
The San Diego member was, in addition, accused in 2008 by the State Attorney in South Dakota (USA) with five counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime. The man was reportedly in possession of three guns and two rifles that were used to attack rival club members.
Spanish agents tracked the man to Madrid along with two other members of the organization, one of which had already been charged with drug trafficking by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
National Police officers tracked the men, who traveled to Galicia to finalize details of their transaction, and found them staying in a local hotel in Mondariz (Pontevedra) and also in a house in the village of Ponteareas (Pontevedra). It was found that the drug transaction was to take place imminently.
The comprehensive monitoring and tracking of the criminals finally led to the arrest on Saturday of the four Canadian citizens as they loaded two vans with approximately 500 kilos of cocaine.
Two Spaniards who had been working with them in Spain and who were responsible for the delivery of the drug were also detained.
Police also seized two vehicles, an SUV and a motor home, along with four mobile phones and two smartphones.
