In a new audio recording, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri issued a statement calling for new attacks in the United States.
The Egyptian born leader called for both small scale attacks, as well as large attacks similar to the September 11th attacks.
According to Zawahiri, smaller scale type attacks would "bleed America economically" with America's large expenses on security.
Zawahiri went on to say that such attacks would not take a large group of people to carry out, but could be done in small groups:
These disparate strikes can be done by one brother or a few of the brothers
An example of Zawahiri's call would be the Boston marathon bombings that took place this year, the attacks were carried out by 2 brothers, with no apparent links to a major group.
Zawahiri speaking on the Boston bombings, lauded the attacks:
The Boston incident confirms to the Americans ... that they are not facing individuals, organizations or groups, but they are facing an uprising Ummah (Muslim community), that rose in jihad to defend its soul, dignity and capabilities
Al-Zawahiri's current whereabouts are believed to be along the Afghan-Pakistan border region, Zawahiri has evaded capture or death from U.S. authorities for over a decade now, with the Egyptian born doctor taking the reigns of Al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden's death in 2011.
