Kolkata - An 11-year-old girl died after failing to sustain the psychological trauma of bullying by her seniors at a school in the city of Kolkata, according to reports.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Christ Church School on the outskirts of Kolkata.
Reportedly, three senior students of the school asked Oindrilla Das to pay Rs. 100 last week. When she refused to pay they locked her in the toilet of the school after study hours before a sanitary staff from the school rescued her.
Deccan Chronicle reported:
“As she screamed in fright, a sanitary staff brought her out and took her home. Soon after, she slipped into a state of shock forcing her parents to admit her in a nursing home where she died yesterday.”
Following the death of the girl Thursday, irate guardians entered the school and ransacked the office premises, damaged furniture and demanded punishment of those responsible for the death of the minor.
The Kolkata administration posted a combat police force around the Christ Church Girls High School to contain the disorder. The police used batons to disperse the angry protesters who caused massive damage to school property during the rampage.
The Hindu reported:
“The guardians, joined by locals, laid a siege to the school’s main gate holding the school authorities responsible for Oindrilla Das’ death and demanding that the principal resign and be handed over to them.”
Parents were agitated because, the school principal had earlier denied any knowledge of the incident.
The agitated crowd forcefully confined Principal Helen Sarkar along with six other teachers within the school, despite assurance that an inquiry would be held into the student’s death. Later she was forced to resign and arrested, according to reports.
State education minister Bratya Basu ordered a probe into the incident.
Reportedly, similar incidents of ragging happened earlier with other junior girls of the Christ Church Girls’ School, but the principal failed to act, said the parents and guardians of the school.
“I have lost my daughter. But at least her death has created awareness which will help save many little girls from the menace of ragging,” the victim’s father Santanu Das said, as quoted by First Post India.
