Warner Bros. Entertainment. has confirmed plans to make a new fantasy movie set in the Harry Potter universe. Calling it an "extended creative partnership" on Twitter, they have enlisted Hogwarts' creator, J.K. Rowling to pen the script herself.
Named after one of Harry Potter's textbook: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the new film will neither be a sequel or a prequel to the original series. Instead, it will take place in New York, 70 years before the thunder-bolt scarred protagonist was born, according to ABC News.
The movie will be the first of a series and will feature Newt Scamander, who is the author of the fictional textbook. The film's setting will be familiar to Harry Potter fans, as the wizardry and hidden magic society laws and customs from the original series will remain the same.
In 2001, Rowling published a special edition of Fantastic Beasts to raise money for Comic Relief, a major UK based charity that aims to eliminate "poverty and social injustice." According to The Independent, it purported to be Harry Potter's actual copy complete with his doodles and notes.
The Hogwarts mandatory fictional textbook that was commissioned in 1918 and published in 1927, is a study of magical creatures (known as Magizoology). It also features an introduction by headmaster Albus Dumbledore. The information in the book is said to have been collected by Scamander through years of travel across five continents.
At first Rowling wasn't sure about the concept when Warner Bros approached her about a Fantastic Beasts film. But as she considered their proposal she developed another idea and pitched it to them, reported BBC News.
I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realised by another writer was difficult, said Rowling.
Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.
I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.
Currently no production dates for the film has been confirmed. Warner Bros, who made the original eight Harry Potter films will also be the TV distributor for the upcoming BBC TV adaptation of Rowling's most recent novel: The Casual Vacancy. It is expected to air in 2014.
