Coquimbo - The “Mohammed VI Center for the Dialogue of Civilizations” is a religious and cultural center located in the city of Coquimbo, Chile. The Mosque has a 40-metre tall minaret which is a scale replica of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, Morocco.
The main religions in Chile are Catholicism, practiced by almost 67 percent of the population, and Protestantism (15 percent). Only about 3,000 people (0.02 percent) claim to be followers of Islam. Most are Arab immigrants arrived in Chile since the mid XIX Century from Lebanon, Palestine and Syria; however, there are also natives of Chile who have converted to Islam.
Until 1988, Muslims in Chile did not have a house of worship for the practice of their faith and used mainly private homes for religious meetings. Since then, they have established at least 4 Islamic centers in Chile and built three mosques located in the cities of Santiago, Iquique and Coquimbo.

Building of the Coquimbo mosque began in 2004. The construction was carried out by Chilean and Arab builders and craftsmen led by Moroccan architect Faissal Cherradi. The mosque was opened in March 2007 with the presence of Chilean civil authorities and a delegation of Moroccan authorities. The structure is located on “Dominante Hill” in Coquimbo city, not far from the Cross of the Third Millennium. The minaret is a replica of the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in Marrakech, Morocco.

As a replica of the impressive Koutoubia Mosque of Marrakech, the Coquimbo Mosque also features elaborated tile work, complex stained glass windows and beautiful wood carvings in all access doors. In addition to the prayer halls, the mosque includes a cultural center open to the public, a specialized library with texts in Spanish, Arabic and other languages, and a museum. The Mohammed VI Center for the Dialogue of Civilizations links the people of the city of Coquimbo with the Islamic culture and it is a symbol of religious coexistence and civilizational understanding.
