article imageDoctor Who: 1970’s Auton mask fetches thousands of pounds on eBay

By Mathew Wace Peck     Sep 9, 2013 in Internet
A rare fibreglass carnival mask that was used in a seventies episode of “Doctor Who” has sold for more than five thousand pounds on eBay, the online auction site.
The mask was one of those worn by the Autons in a story, Terror of the Autons, which starred Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Katy Manning as his companion, Jo grant, and Roger Delgado as the Doctor’s arch-nemesis, the Master.
The mask sold for £5,154.00 after 51 bids.
In August, Steven Heywood – a spokesperson for eBay – said that sales of Doctor Who-related items on the auction site had increased massively following the announcement that Peter Capaldi had been cast as the Twelfth Doctor. “Fans have been flocking to the site following the announcement of the new Doctor, and with over 84,000 Doctor Who related live listings, eBay.co.uk offers fans the perfect platform to get their hands on unique and bespoke pieces of memorabilia,” he said.
The Auton carnival-mask eBay listing – “Dr Who prop Terror of the Autons Carnival Head – Genuine” – was sold by miss-p73.
The eBay online listing, which ended on Thursday, 5 September, reads as follows:
Genuine prop from 1971 - 4 part Jon Pertwee series The Terror of the Autons.
Fibreglass carnival head with felt eyes and painted details. Foam rubber hat long since perished.
Was given to my family in the late ’70s when my father worked for a studio transport company. Much loved and played with when we were kids, so has been a bit chipped and scraped, see photos for details. A great piece of collectable memorabilia nevertheless!
The alien Autons are in essence human-sized plastic dummies – not unlike shop-window dummies. The Autons are animated by the Nestene Consciousness, an extraterrestrial, disembodied gestalt intelligence.

Terror of the Autons was a four-part story written by the late Robert Holmes. It was directed by Barry letts, at the time also the show’s producer. It was the first story of Pertwee’s second season as the Doctor. It was the second story to feature the Autons, who had been introduced the previous year, in Pertwee’s first outing as the Third Doctor – Spearhead from Space, also by Holmes.
Thirty-five years after their first outing, the Autons were used by Russell T Davies, to introduce the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) – in Rose – when Doctor Who returned, in 2005.
