Pine Bluff - Sounding a little like a scene from a Die Hard movie, a 107-year-old man was shot dead on Saturday night in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, after he refused to surrender and exchanged fire with a SWAT team.
Arkansasmatters reports that according to local authorities, police officers responded to a domestic disturbance, involving aggravated assault on two people at a home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The 107-year-old suspect, Monroe Isadore, had allegedly pointed a gun at the two residents. Police removed the two persons to safety.
However, when the officers approached the bedroom where Isadore was hiding, the man shot through the door.
No one was hit by the shot. However, police decided to retreat and called for backup, which came in the form of a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team.
The SWAT officers then attempted to negotiate with the suspect. They first placed a camera in the room where Isadore had taken refuge, to verify that he was, in fact, armed with a handgun.
Then they tried to reach an agreement with the man, which failed.
The SWAT officers then reportedly fed gas into the room through a bedroom window, thinking the man would have no choice but to surrender.
However, the 107-year-old tough guy started firing rounds at the SWAT team instead.
Reportedly, the officers then broke down the bedroom door and threw in a distraction device. The distraction was unfortunately not successful. Isadore shot at the team entering the room, whereupon officers were forced to return the fire, shooting him dead.
Police officials are now investigating the incident to try and establish why it happened.
