Matt Smith has begun filming his final episode of Doctor Who, the 2013 Christmas special that will also introduce Peter Capaldi as his successor, the Twelfth Doctor.
Smith, 30, returned to Cardiff earlier this week, to begin filming the Steven Moffat-scripted story.
Capaldi was revealed as the Twelfth Doctor live on television at the beginning of August.
Attending the GQ Men of the Year Awards last week, the 30-year-old actor confirmed to Daybreak's Richard Arnold that his final episode began shooting today (Sunday, 8 September).
Since completing his penultimate episode as the Eleventh Doctor, the yet-to-be-broadcast Doctor Who 50th-anniversary special, Smith has been in the States filming his first Hollywood movie — Ryan Gosling's How to catch a Monster.
In his interview with Arnold, Smith confirmed that he'd now need to wear a wig for his Who role, as his trademark Eleventh Doctor big hair has been shorn off. "I did it for a film, but it means I have to wear a wig in Doctor Who, which is a nightmare. I'm excited, I start shooting the Christmas Special [on] Sunday. It'll be sad – the end of a wonderful era!
As earlier, the read-through for the 2013 Christmas special was held in the Welsh capital on Friday.
"Christmas starts early for the #DoctorWho team! Here’s Matt Smith at today’s Christmas Special read through," the BBC reported.
Matt was in brilliant form at the read through for this year’s Christmas Special, written by Steven Moffat. In fact, seeing him back in action as the Doctor made us want to fast forward to November to see the eagerly awaited 50th anniversary special!
The editor of Doctor Who Magazine, Tom Spilsbury, was present at the read-through. He later tweeted, "The Doctor Who Christmas read-through was lovely – and rather moving. Matt Smith has been a terrific Doctor, but he's also a true gentleman."
Also there was Doctor Who make-up designer Claire Pritchard, who said afterwards, "Quite an emotional day at the doctors today he was reading a story."
Pritchard has also works on Moffat's other series, Sherlock.
In its report, the BBC said, "He’s back! Here’s a photo of Matt Smith taken earlier today (4 September) just after the read through for the Christmas Special. Matt was in brilliant form at the read-through [...] seeing him back in action as the Doctor made us want to fast-forward to November to see the eagerly awaited 50th anniversary special!"
Doctor Who returns to TV screens on Saturday, 23 November 2013, for a feature-length episode to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary. The regeneration from Smith's Eleventh Doctor to Capaldi's Twelfth will take place in the Christmas special, to be shown on 25 December.
Last week, it was revealed that the Cybermen would be on hand to @help@ the transition!
