New York - Days 12 and 13 saw four semi-final matches take place. The two top seeds from the Men's and Women's draw were able to make it to the final.
Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka played out a thrilling five-set match (2-6 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-4), with the Serbian emerging the victor.
The two matched each other blow for blow in their four-hour encounter, before Djokovic won the last set 6-4.
"Wawrinka was a better player for most of the match because he was aggressive and played better tennis," said Djokovic.
"I just tried to hang on and fight and be mentally tough and believe all the way through I could actually win."
The number 1 seed will now face number 2 seed Rafael Nadal, who won his match against Richard Gasquet, albeit with a bit more ease.
The Spaniard overcame a difficult second set to win 6-4 7-6 6-2. He talked about the final matchup against Djokovic:
We are playing at very good level so the match becomes great because we play long rallies, we bring our game to the limit situations, and becomes a very difficult match for both of us. Hopefully I hope to be ready for that. I don't know. I gonna try. I need to keep playing very aggressive and play a very, very good match. Only like this I gonna have chances. That's what I gonna try."
In the Women's draw, Serena Williams will play Victoria Azarenka in the final. Top two seeds defeated their respective opponents in straight sets.
Williams won the first set against Na Li in just 29 minutes, as Serena won 6-0. The second set took twice as long, as Na Li fought hard in the seventh game. it proved to be in vain, as Serena won the following game, winning the final set 6-3. After the match Serena said:
"Well, I think I started out really well and I was really focused. I think Li Na may have been a little off, but I think it was because I started out so well and then she may have not played her best. But I think she played well. It was, I thought especially towards the end, a very quality match."
Azarenka defeated Flavia Pennetta without too much fuss, winning 6-4 6-2. The Belarusian is delighted to be in the final of the competition:
"Well, it's amazing opportunity, something that every tennis player dreams of, you know, to be in the final of the US Open and play against the best player in the world. It's something that I'm so excited about, and I can't wait to go out and play."
The final matches will be on Sunday and Monday.
