By Sami Zaatari     Sep 7, 2013 in World
The Egyptian army has mounted a major offensive in the northern Sinai, targeting militant locations, which the military termed "terrorist hotbeds".
The northern Sinai region borders both the Gaza Strip and Israel, and has been the scene of several militant attacks that have targeted Egyptian security forces.
Attacks in the region have increased ever since the military overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi, with several different militant groups, some being linked to Al-Qaeda, going on the offensive.
The Egyptian military offensive included at least 6 helicopters, tanks, infantry, and heavy weaponry.
Several airstrikes were conducted from the air, with ground troops moving in after according to military sources, with dozens being reportedly killed so far in the operation.
