New York - Rafael Nadal continues his assault on the US Open with a convincing win. The Williams sisters were also in action in the doubles tournament.
Nadal defeated his compatriot Tommy Robredo in straight sets (6-0 6-2 6-2). Robredo had a good run but Nadal has grown into the habit of steamrolling over anyone on the other side of the net. Speaking afterwards, Nadal said:
"I think I played my best match of the US Open this year. It gives me a lot of positive energy.
"I'll play a little bit tomorrow. I need it. I'm in the semi-finals and I want to enjoy every moment.
"Richard [Gasquet] is playing a great tournament and it's great to see him in the semi-finals."
Nadal was referring to Richard Gasquet who will be his semi-final opponent after beating David Ferrer is a five-set thriller (6-3 6-1 4-6 2-6 6-3).
Victoria Azarenka showed no signs of fatigue, as she swept past Daniela Hantuchova. The Belarusian played yesterday, but had no trouble beating her Slovakian opponent in straight sets.
In an all-Italian clash, Flavia Pennetta got the better of her compatriot Roberta Vinci, winning 6-4 6-1. Vinci isn’t completely out of the tournament, as she will pair up with Sara Errani to face Venus and Serena Williams in the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles.
The Williams sisters defeated Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova in their third round tie. They got off to a storming start winning the first set in just 21 minutes. The second proved to be a lengthy affair, going to a tie-break.
