Will LeBron James be adding an Emmy to his trophy case in the future? It seems there's a chance as he's set to executive produce a sitcom with Starz.
According to ESPN, he is teaming up with the network for a still-in-development half-hour scripted series called “Survivor's Remorse.” An article on Bleacher Report said that the title of the show is a reference to an actual mental condition experienced by someone who survived a horrific event where others died.
According to SB Nation, Starz said the sitcom will center around two guys from Philadelphia who achieve fame, one in the NBA and one not, and will focus on how they learn to deal with the new-found stardom while their closest friends are still struggling.
In a press release from Starz, James said, "When my business partners Tom Werner and Maverick Carter brought up the idea of creating a television series that would capture the story of what happens when you make it out, I jumped at the chance. For Maverick and I even to be where we are right now, given where we came from, is kind of hard to believe. I felt like it was a story that needed to be told, and nobody can craft a story like Tom Werner. He has an incredible vision for television and I'm really excited to partner with him and the rest of our team."
James, 28, who is a two-time NBA champion and has been named the league's best player four times, grew up poor in Akron, Ohio. He is also the second-highest-earning athlete in America with annual salary and additional endorsements worth a combined $56.5 million, according to Reuters.
For those that are scared that this might flop, have no fear — he's going to have a lot of help. The other executive producers attached are his manager and childhood friend, Maverick Carter, business partner, Paul Wachter, Tom Werner who produced sitcom classics “The Cosby Show” and “Rosanne,” and Mike O'Malley from “Glee” who will be pulling double duty as an executive producer and a writer on the show.
Starz has not said when the series will air.
