New York - Day nine of the US Open saw the the start of the quarter-finals of the women's singles, with Na Li and Serena Williams pulling off wins.
One of the day's early matches saw Victoria Azarenka defeated Ana Ivanovic 4-6 6-3 6-4 in their rescheduled match. Whilst the two played out their fourth round match, two quarter final matches were taking place.
Na Li made it into the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time as she beat Ekaterina Makarova in three sets. after the match Na Li said:
"For me, this is the first time to come to the semi-finals, so I'm very proud of myself."
She can now look forward to a match against Serena Williams, who continued to bulldoze through the opposition as she demolished Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain. The 6-0 6-0 score line in no way flattering, as the number one seed showed how far ahead she is ahead of the competition.
Novak Djokovic was flawless in his straight sets destruction of Marcel Granollers. The world number one will play Mikhail Youzhny.
The Russian overcame Lleyton Hewitt in a tough five-set affair where he came back from 2-1 to win 6-3 3-6 6-7 6-4 7-5.
Defending champion Andy Murray continues to stumble through the rounds as he came from a set down to beat Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin.
He’ll face Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter finals as he defeated no. 5 seed Tomas Berdych. The Swiss player dropped a set before defeating his Czech opponent.
