In the video, Jacob Appelbaum, Internet activist and journalist, speaks on behalf of Edward J. Snowden at the Whistleblower Award ceremony in Berlin, Germany.
Transparency International Deutschland e.V. contributed towards the award, which is given every two years by the Vereinigung Deutscher Wissenschaftler (VDW e.V.) and the German Section of the International Association Of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA e.V.).
Persons are honored who reveal malpractices and dangerous developments for humans and society, and that affect democracy, peace and the environment.
Edward Snowden, NSA whistleblower
As reported on Digital Journal, the award was given for the courageous actions of Edward J. Snowden which came to light recently in the NSA whistleblower scandal. Snowden gave us all insights into the surveillance and espionage practices of intelligence agencies.
Snowden showed that every one of us can be affected by these practices at any time and without there being any grounds for suspicion.
As Snowden has temporary asylum in Russia for one year, and cannot safely leave the country, the award was accepted on his behalf by Jacob Appelbaum, who made the above impassioned speech.
Guardian Journalist Glenn Greenwald, the journalist responsible for relaying the NSA leaks, made a video message himself on Saturday, which is featured below.
“If I ran the committee, making the choice of who was to receive this award, it would take me probably one and a half seconds at most to have come to the conclusion that he is the only person deserving of the award this year.”
“He told me in good conscience that he could not sit by quietly and allow privacy and Internet freedom to be destroyed while doing nothing about it.”
