Country group Gloriana has done extremely well over the last few years. Their sophomore studio album “A Thousand Miles Left Behind” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Album charts, as well as No. 10 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts.
Gloriana is comprised of Rachel Reinert, as well as brothers Tom and Mike Gossin. Tom from the group took some time from their busy schedule to talk about their music and their successes.
They were named “Top New Vocal Group” of 2010 by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and in 2009, they were honored with the “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” award at the 2009 American Music Awards (AMAs), where they bested out Lady Gaga. “That was our second album and it is always the hump to get over in a musician’s career. We wrote all of the songs on there and it was a very personal album for us since it tells our stories over the past two years and it coincides with a specific era of our lives,” he said. “Winning the AMA award was probably our craziest moment as a band so far, especially since Lady Gaga is such a huge star.”
Tom added, “It was definitely an honor to be recognized by the Academy of Country Music since that’s our genre and the people that we most want to impress. That was really special. We actually received the award while standing onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, which was really cool, so that was an awesome moment.”
Their latest single “Can’t Shake You” reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts. It is about not being able to “shake” the memory of a past romance. “That felt great since it was technically our third single release from our latest album,” Tom said. “I actually wrote it about my own situation. I am actually getting married in October and my fiancé and I had an on and off relationship over the last ten years. The song was released in the off-time and I knew that it was meant to be with her since I could not ‘shake her.’ I realized that I wanted her in my life since everything reminded me of her.”
His personal favorite song on the album is “Carolina Rose,” which also dealt with his fiancé. “It’s the story of us getting back together so that was really special to me,” he said.
The single “(Kissed You) Good Night” is their most successful to date, since it has been certified platinum and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts; moreover, it was the most played country single by a group in 2012. “I wrote that song with Josh Kear and it came together so easily. I had the idea for the song and we were done with it in approximately two hours,” he said. “At the end of the day we are glad that the people connected with the song.”
The group is out on the road playing headlining shows across America. “We have been touring consistently since 2009. Our first tour was with Taylor Swift and we haven’t stopped since. It has been a wild ride for us and we have gotten used to living on the road. This lifestyle is the norm for us and we had hoped for this our whole lives as kids,” he said.
He listed Vince Gill as his dream duet choice and dubbed him as an “amazing musician.” “Vince paved the way for so many artists and he is such a great songwriter. I call him the ‘King of Natural.’ It would be a real honor to do a song with him,” he said.
