article imageBritish actor Russell Tovey lands his first major US role

Russell Tovey, the British actor known for playing George the werewolf in Being Human and Alonso Frame in Doctor Who, has landed his first major US role.
Tovey will play Kevin in Looking, the HBO dramedy series that follows the lives of a group of gay men living in San Francisco.
According to Gay Star News, Kevin is “an accomplished video-game wunderkind who has achieved financial and critical success at a young age”. In Looking, he will work closely with Patrick, the show’s lead character, played by Jonathan Groff.
Although Tovey is an openly gay man – and has been throughout his professional career – he has tended to steer clear from taking on gay roles. Till now, the 31-year-old’s only major gay role has been in Doctor Who, where, as Midshipman Alonso Frame, he hooked up with Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in David Tennant’s swansong story, The End of Time.
Speaking to the Independent earlier, Tovey explained why he’s avoided taking on gay parts. ‘Every character I play is straight, which is unique, my agent says, because it’s not really been done before that someone who is completely out is able to play straight roles,” he said. “So for me to play it has to be something special, because it might actually be more of a risk. So I’m waiting for that role – I want it to be something that moves things forward.”
Tovey’s first major role was as Rudge in Alan Bennett’s play The History Boys. He also played the same character in the 2006 Nicholas Hytner-directed film version of the same name. As well as Doctor Who and Being Human, Tovey is known for his starring roles in the BBC 3 sitcom Him and Her and the ITV sitcom The Job Lot. In 2009, he auditioned for the part of the Eleventh Doctor, the Doctor Who role eventually going to Matt Smith.
Looking is created by Michael Lannen. The eight-part series will centre on three gay friends – played by Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett – as they look for love.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the first season will begin shooting in San Francisco in the next few weeks.
