article imageInterview with country superstar Jake Owen: 'Days of Gold' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 30, 2013 in Entertainment
Country singer and songwriter Jake Owen is one of the genre’s most accomplished artists. His previous studio album “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” was a major commercial success.
It debuted at the top spot on the Billboard Hot Country Album charts and it delivered four consecutive No. 1 singles, which included the double-platinum title cut, the platinum “Alone With You,” as well as “The One That Got Away” and “Anywhere With You,” both of which were certified gold. Earlier in the year, Owen headlined the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl Halftime Show, in an effort to kick off the New Year.
In Billboard’s 2012 year-end issue, his name was included in such categories as “Hot Country Songs Artists” at No. 13, “Top Country Artists” at No. 21, “Top Country Album” for “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” at No. 29, as well as “Hot Country Songs” for “Alone With You” at No. 14.
Owen was featured in the music issue of Entertainment Weekly, where he ranked among the “30 Greatest Artists Right Now”; moreover, he was honored as the 2012 “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” at the American Country Awards, which is a fan-voted awards ceremony. His collaboration with country acts Sugarland and Little Big Town on “Life in a Northern Town” earned him his first Grammy nomination for “Best Country Collaboration with Vocals” in 2009, and he was subsequently honored as the 2009 “Top New Male Vocalist of the Year” by the Academy of Country Music (ACM). “The fact that I get to wake up every day and continue to do what I love and strum my guitar every night is the highlight of it all. There is no amount of awards or anything that could ever really compare to the feeling that I get every night on a daily basis,” he said.
Owen’s latest single “Days of Gold,” co-written by Jaren Johnston and Neil Mason, was released to country radio and it marked the biggest first radio week of his career. The tune is about spending time with family, friends and living life to the fullest, a philosophy that Owen lives by. “It’s definitely one of the best songs that I have ever recorded,” Owen acknowledged.
“It’s doing really well and it has a lot of energy to it. We had good timing for this type of song.”
He performed “Days of Gold” on August 8 on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” which was the platform where he revealed that his new single is the title cut from his new CD. The album is expected to be out on December 3, via his record label, RCA Nashville. It was produced by Joey Moi, who has worked with such musical acts as Florida Georgia Line, Daughtry and Santana.
A few weeks ago, on August 19, Owen threw an epic “Summer Block Party” in Nashville, Tennessee, in order to celebrate his fourth No. 1 hit with “Anywhere With You.” He invited fans to the free show via his social networks, Facebook and Twitter, and the attendance was quite astonishing since 20,000 fans accepted his invitation. This show reached maximum capacity and fans lined the streets of Music Row and tailgated in nearby parking lots throughout the night. “That was a pretty flattering feeling to look out there and see how many people showed up to see what it is that I do,” he said.
His high-energy live shows, reminiscent to those of country superstar Garth Brooks, have helped him land opening slots for such artists as Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. He was also a part of Jason Aldean’s “Night Train Tour” this year, where they were able to perform sold-out shows at such venues as the Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, as well as New York City’s Madison Square Garden. “That feels really great. I am continuing to do what I love and now that I put a lot of the building blocks in the foundation before me, I am now able to build upon those. I have a higher confidence level now than I have ever had in the past. It feels good,” he said.
After years of opening for other artists, Owen embarked on his first headlining tour last year, “CMT on Tour Jake Owen: The Summer Never Ends,” which made CMT history for the most consecutive sold-out shows for the annual nationwide tour since its inception 11 years ago.
He wrapped up his first headlining tour in his hometown of Vero Beach, Florida, on December 15, with his annual foundation concert. His sold-out show raised well over $125,000 for the Jake Owen Foundation, which supports many charitable and youth organizations that are dear to his heart. “I have a foundation and we have added some beneficiaries over the last few years. We took it to the national level with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Autism Speaks, as well as Habitat for Humanity and a lot of local charities, as well as Boys and Girls Clubs. I feel that I am at a place in life where I am able to help people and I always enjoy giving back especially to a community that gave me a lot. I enjoy doing that,” the chart-topping vocalist said graciously.
In addition to his musical endeavors, he is a husband and a father. He and his wife Lacey welcomed their first child, a daughter named Olive Pearl Owen, on Thanksgiving Day of 2012.
On balancing a family and a music career, Owen shared, “It’s natural instinct. I wake up in the morning and I balance it the best way I can.”
Owen noted that he is inspired and motivated by life in general. “Now that I am married and I have a little girl, I am motivated by my friends and family,” he said. “I will keep doing what I do and I will keep working hard. I am looking forward to the new album coming out on December 3. I hope to go out on tour and come to a city near you,” he concluded.
