On Aug. 23 a puppy was thrown to the ground from two stories up. The identity of his owner is unknown. According to media reports, a man leaving for work saw a bundle tossed from an apartment balcony and then heard the dog's cries of pain. He located the puppy and brought the injured dog to the vet.
The puppy sustained injuries serious enough to require extensive surgery.
The incident occurred in Fredericksburg, Va. and the puppy was brought to the
Prince William County Animal Shelter.
"He probably was thrown off a two-story balcony. And then somebody heard it and rescued him," said Beate Begley, animal rescue manager with the Prince William County Animal Shelter, reported
WTOP News. "Nobody really saw it, but everybody heard the thump it made."
The puppy's leg was fractured in four places, and these injuries required leg surgery, which cost approximately $2,600. Employees at the shelter have named the border collie "Dexter." He is expected to make a full recovery, reported
W*USA 9.
“[Doctors] performed surgery on him on Saturday and they put four pins in his leg. He now has a cast on, which he has to keep on for at least three weeks,” says Capt. Dawn Harman, the Prince William County Police Department's Animal Control bureau director, reported
WJLA News.
Dexter will reportedly be placed up for adoption by the animal shelter in the future if an owner does not come forward. The pup was not wearing a collar or any ID when rescued.
"Yes, but please be advised Dexter is not up for adoption yet. He is still considered a stray and has to be held for a possible owner to come forward," the agency wrote in response to posts on
Facebook.
Donations are being accepted to help defray the costs of Dexter's surgery and also to help other abused and homeless animals.
At this time, there are no reports of any suspects being identified with throwing the puppy off the balcony. No witnesses have come forward to provide more information. The investigation is still open.
