article imageNewspaper says former girlfriend of North Korean leader executed

By Marcus Hondro     Aug 29, 2013 in World
South Korea has reported a woman, a singer, reported to be a former girlfriend of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, has been executed. Hyon Song-wol was arrested with 12 others from her bands for making and distributing porn videos.
All 12, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper said, were executed nine days ago by machine gun fire. To make things more gruesome, family and other members of Hyon's bands, as well as their families, too, were forced to watch the killings. Guilty by association, they have been sent to prison camps.

A Chinese source told Chosun Ilbo "key members" of all three of Hyon's musical bands and their families were forced to watch the deaths. “They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on."
Hyon had patriotic hits for the regime including "Footsteps of Soldiers," "We are Troops of the Party" and "I Love Pyongyang." There is no corroboration that Hyon or any of her band members made porn and, as the New York magazine wrote, it's hard to confirm reports coming from the country. However, New York magazine noted that Chosun Ilbo is one of South Korea's largest and most trusted daily newspapers.
She'd met Kim Jong-un about 10 years ago and it's not known how long they dated. At that time there were reports Kim Jong-il, the former leader and now-deceased father of Kim Jong-un, did not approve of the relationship and told his song to stop seeing her. While she married an army officer and may have had a child with him, she continued to see Kim Jong-un for an undetermined length of time.
The South Korean newspaper did not specify if Hyon Song-wol's soldier-husband and their child were among those forced to watch and sent to a prison camp.
