New York - Umbrellas were in abundance yesterday, as the US Open was plagued by rain. Twenty-eight matches were called off yesterday, as the men’s first round was given priority.
This allowed defending Champion Andy Murray to get off to a good start as he beat Frenchman Michael Llodra in straight sets.
Murray had the misfortune of playing his first round tie on the third day of the tournament, which can happen at the US Open. Murray said he is not going to let it bother him:
"Anyone that knows sport knows that playing seven matches over 13 days is harder than playing seven matches over 15 days."
"You obviously get less time to recover and rest, but you deal with it, do all the recovery stuff and get as much sleep as possible. Now I'm in a routine of playing every other day, which you do at all the other Slams."
One of the day’s shockers saw number 16 seed Fabio Fognini defeated in straight sets by Rajeev Ram. The American had never made it past the first round of the US open, but can now look forward to a second round tie against Marcel Granollers of Spain.
Elsewhere there were wins for Juan Martin Del Potro, Leyton Hewitt and S Wawrinka all won their matches
Serena Williams, Sabine Lisicki, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic were not able to play out their second round ties due to the disastrous weather conditions at flushing meadows.
Venus Williams couldn’t build on her impressive first round victory, as she lost to Zheng Jie in a tight match.
But Sloane Stephens was able to continue her positive start to the tournament with a positive start with a straight sets victory over Urszula Radwanska. She will go on to face fellow American Jamie Hampton in the third round, who defeated Kristina Mladenovic.
Urszula’s sister Agnieszka had better luck in her second round tie against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, winning 6-0 7-5.
British no.1 Laura Robson will meet number 5 seed Li Na in the third round, as she beat Caroline Garcia 6-4 7-6.
Yesterday’s results can be found here, whilst today’s list of fixtures can be seen here, provided the rain holds up.
