Tybee Island - What Forrest Gump's momma always said is reinterpreted here and applied to visits to Tybee Island, Georgia, where you never know what you're gonna get.
One of the most famous lines from the 1994 film "Forrest Gump" is when Forrest states, "My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'"
I thought of that line as I compared two recent visits to Tybee Island, Georgia. After an evening outing to Tybee Island's North Beach about a week ago, I posted the following on Facebook: Perfect evening on Tybee! Swam in relatively warm ocean, waves were just right (not too high, not too calm), pelicans and sea gulls fishing all around, and then some interesting cloud formations to photograph!

On that evening, many folks, like myself, were 20 yards or more out from shore, easily jumping through the three- to four-feet-high waves that rolled in from time to time. The water was warm, the breeze was light, and as the sun began to set, the cloud formations were spectacular.

But, as with life, "you never know what you're gonna get." A return trip on Sunday afternoon to the same spot on Tybee Island was a very different experience. There were a lot of people at the beach, but most were on the shore.

The wind was strong, to the point that sea gulls were having trouble walking straight on the sand, the ocean was colder, and the waves were relentless.

The six- to nine-feet-high waves were coming in back-to-back and simply pummeling people who dared to venture into the ocean, even 15 yards from the shore.

After battling the strong waves for about 30 minutes or so, and getting knocked down a few times, I decided to head to what is, comparatively, the kiddie pool — Tybee Creek. Tybee Creek is at the southern end of Tybee Island where sand bars divide the Atlantic Ocean from the creek.

Once there, I enjoyed a nice, relaxing swim. Nearby, however, were individuals who enjoy high winds and extreme sports. Unlike me, kitesurfers seek out days like this. To each his own. My preference was to photograph their pretty kites.

While the wind knocked me around and got sand on my camera lens, I noticed its effect on the sea grass. The wind moved it around and it appeared as if sea grass art was being created.

So, I say, life is like a day at the beach. You never know what you're gonna get. One day is perfectly suited for some folks who want to swim in the ocean and jump through smaller waves, while another day draws folks who want to harness the power of the wind and ocean and sail through the air. Yet, almost without exception, on any given evening at the beach you know what you're gonna get when it comes to clouds and sunsets. During last week's visit to Tybee Island, I saw the unique cloud formations pictured above. During the more recent visit, the sunset seen below made the visit even more worthwhile.
