Washington wants to host Summer Olympics in 2024

By John Sevigny     Aug 27, 2013 in Sports
Despite being snubbed to host the Olympic games in 2012 officials in Washington believe their city is a perfect location for the 2024 Summer Games.
In an interview, Robert Sweeney, president of DC 2024, an exploratory organization hoping to draw the games to the US capital, said the effort is backed by all city officials, as well as Daniel Snyder, and Ted Leonsis, the respective owners of the Redskins and the Capitals.
"We will be a front-runner," Sweeney said, according to the Washington Examiner.
The idea could be tempting to the International Olympic Committee. Parts of Washington are among the most secure in the world, and the city is well-prepared to host large events. There's also the possibility, backers of the effort say, of using existing stadiums in neighboring Virginia and Maryland. Hosting the games would cost between $4 billion and $6 billion.
"We look forward to assisting the Washington Olympic Committee in presenting the nation’s capital and fabulous surrounding region to the Olympic sporting world,” Snyder said in a press release distributed by the team. “We are fortunate to have most of the venues needed in an internationally recognized city that is accustomed to staging high-profile events.”
According to USA Today, relations between the US Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee had been strained because of a disagreement over revenue sharing, a situation that hampered past bids. As a result the United States hasn't hosted the Summer games since 1996. The two committees have since ironed out their differences and chances for holding the games in the United States are better now.
Washington is expected to compete with at least 10 other U.S. cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas. On the international level, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Canada and other countries are also competing to host the 2024 Summer games.
In 2015 the US Olympic Committee will nominate a city in the United States to host the the 2014 Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will make a final decision in 2017.
