It is recently reported that international martial arts actor Tony Jaa is being added to the cast for "Fast and Furious 7." The film is due for release July 2014.
The “Fast and the Furious” franchise, which currently encompasses six movies at the moment, is known for appealing to the niche of street racing in the form of intense action movies. Now, while maintaining the allure and romance of dangerous high-speed street racing, it seems that the Fast and the Furious franchise is slowly stepping into martial arts territory. One can look at “Fast and Furious 6” which had professional MMA fighter Gina Carano added to the cast. In the trailers, you can see an intense fight scene between Carano and Michelle Rodriguez (who does have Boxing experience). Now, it is reported that international martial arts actor Tony Jaa could be joining the cast of “Fast and Furious 7.” Currently, it is unknown what role Jaa will be playing in the movie.
Originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Jaa is joining the cast of Fast and Furious 7. Being notable in Thailand-based martial arts films, this will be the first time that Jaa will be cast in a US film. Jaa explains that he's a fan of the franchise and is looking forward to working with both Vin Diesel (who plays Dominic Toretto) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (who plays DSS Agent Luke Hobbs). Jaa didn't disclose much; except that he was looking forward to working with those two. It is unknown what role Jaa will play.
Beyond Hollywood reports that filming starts next month and the film will be released July 2014. Tony Jaa, stunt-man turned actor, is internationally known for “Ong Bak.” Other notable films are “The Protector” aka “Tom Yum Goong,” “Ong Bak 2,” and “Ong Bak 3.” His recent film, “Tom Yum Goong 2” aka “The Protector 2,” has recently been released to theaters across Thailand. Also, he has two future films coming up in which he works alongside actor Dolph Lundgren. The first is known as “A Man Will Rise” and the second known as “Skin Trade.”
Asides from Tony Jaa, one shouldn't forget about Jason Statham who is no stranger to martial arts combat. At the end of Fast and Furious 6, which connects to “Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” Statham makes his cameo appearance revealing himself to be the villain for Fast and Furious 7. Plus, one shouldn't forget about UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey. It is unknown what role Rousey will play in the movie; but, it is confirmed that she is part of the cast.
With Jaa, Statham, and Rousey (Olympic Bronze Medal Judoka turned professional MMA fighter), it would seem that the Fast and the Furious franchise is slowly entering into the martial arts genre.
