Toronto - As summer wraps up the weather becomes perfect for hiking and picnics in the autumn colours. As our thoughts turn to fall festivals and thanksgiving in southern Ontario make sure you add Ball's Falls to your list of places to go.
Just an hour and ten minutes south of Toronto's city center you can immerse yourself in the natural setting at Ball's Falls Conservation area, near the town of Jordan, Ontario.

Being so close to the Greater Toronto Area, Ball's Falls, is easily accessed for a quiet hike on a well maintained trail to see the upper falls, there is two sets of falls, lower and upper, and have a picnic lunch. Visit the Center for Conservation on the grounds all ran by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.

The Niagara Conservation Authority does charge admission for some of its parks and Ball's Falls Conservation area does have an admission fee now even if you are just going for a hike. The $5.75 per person or maximum $18.00 a carload at time of writing this, is worth it when you realize the area is kept and sustained with all buildings maintained for future generations. Right now you can answer a short questionnaire (study up) and get a free admission with the purchase of one.

There is no better time to head to the park than when the leaves start to change colours and the autumn rains have created some water flow over the falls. Water flow varies greatly with the seasons, snow melts and precipitation. My photos are from the 2009 fall season. It is beautiful any time and a great place for a winter snowshoe when it has snow, but if you can manage to catch the window of peak autumn colours in the area, it is a beautiful autumn hike.

Along with hiking in the park, there is a church from the early industrial settlement that can be rented for weddings, tours are given of the Ball's home and other heritage buildings on the site, and there is a stone wall remnant from the early settlement along the hiking trail.

Don't miss the 39th annual Ball's Falls Thanksgiving Festival coming up October 11th to 14th. You'll find craft vendors, face painting, be able to book tours of the heritage buildings, and do a hike. There is a lot to do at the festival and this year for the first time they will have a band playing on the Saturday according to their site.
