Arona - National Police in Tenerife have located an 85-year-old Irish priest accused of sexually abusing three altar boys for years. He was detained under a European arrest warrant.
The acts were committed between 1955 and 1991 in various churches and religious centers in the UK.
The first contact with victims occurred when they were 7-, 8- and 12-years-old. In two cases abuses, such as kissing or sexual fondling, continued for 7 and 8 years.
The first case occurred in 1955, when the detainee was 27 and his victim was 7-years-old. The priest reportedly called it "an instruction in sexual matters."
The second victim was an 8-year-old altar boy in 1963. This abuse reportedly continued for 8 years.
The third victim was an 12-year-old altar boy in 1991. In this case, the defendant enjoyed the confidence of the child's family and "took care of him" while they were away on a 2 week vacation.
On August 23, specialists with Fugitive Location Group of the Commissioner General of Judicial Police, working in collaboration with the south Tenerife police station, have located and arrested the fugitive in the vicinity of his home in the town of Arona on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The fugitive will be handed over to the British authorities.
