article imageMontreal Canadiens sign veteran defenceman Douglas Murray

By Marcus Hondro     Aug 22, 2013 in Sports
The Montreal Canadiens announced today the signing of big defenceman Douglas Murray. Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin has signed Murray to a one-year deal at $1.5 million per.
Murray, 33, was an 8th round pick of the San Jose Sharks in 1999 and after parts of three seasons in the AHL made it to the big club in 2005. He stayed with San Jose until last year's trade deadline when the Sharks dealt him to a Pittsburgh Penguin team looking for depth heading into the playoffs.
Murray scored twice for the Pens in the postseason.
The Swedish rearguard is 6'3" and 245 pounds. He has seven goals and 62 points in 465 NHL games. Montreal will be looking for Murray to bolster a defence that needs more size and grit, and if Murray can regain his form of the past he'll be a strong addition.
