A Toronto police constable has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Sammy Yatim, an 18-year-old shot nine times while he was holding a weapon alone on a streetcar.
An arrest warrant was issued Monday morning for Const. James Forcillo, who has not been arrested yet, the Special Investigations Unit said in a news release.
Yatim was shot nine times and then Tasered several weeks ago while inside a Toronto Transit Commission streetcar. The vehicle was stopped on a busy downtown street near a popular park. Yatim was brandishing a knife while alone on the streetcar, and when police surrounded the vehicle Yatim was shot nine times by Forcillo.
A YouTube video of the shooting went viral soon after Yatim's death, which gave rise to a public outcry, marches near Toronto police stations and several vigils.
