article imageFilm-maker Ridley Scott casting for 'Exodus' in Almería, Spain

Unemployed Spaniards have been lining up by the thousands for a chance to be an extra in Ridley Scott's upcoming biblical epic, "Exodus". Casting has been held in Almería in southern Spain.
With Andalucía being one of the regions worst hit by unemployment in the current economic crisis in Spain, with around 35 percent out of work, who could resist a chance at making a daily wage of €80 ($107) playing even a small part in the story of Moses and the Jewish exodus to the promised land?
According to one of the casting organizers, Nerea Herrero, "Half of Almería and half of Spain has come."
Scott has recently been looking for around 3,000-4,000 extras for the new biblical epic. Currently casting is for the parts of the many slaves who will appear in the movie. Apparently they are looking for people whose skin is dark, who must look either of African or of Arab origin, with beards, and they must, apparently, be thin.
"We are looking for very, very thin people, even if it is a bit over the top, because we need people who look like slaves and they were starving," said Herrero.
According to Herrero, over the last few days around 10,000 people have attended a casting call in the city of Almería, with yet another 5,000 in the nearby town of Pechina. Reportedly the crowds have come from as far north as Galicia and the Basque Country in the hope of getting on to the big screen and making a few euros.
"We did not expect so many people but we're glad we had this good response because we need a lot of people," Herrero said.
Final casting was held on Friday, with around 3,000 people turning up, some arriving early in the morning to get a good place in the queue.
25-year-old unemployed farm worker, Antonio Jose Pinteño, said, "I got up at 6 a.m. to come here but I had to wait two or three hours because there were so many people in the queue."
The lucky applicants will be happy to hear that shooting is expected to start in mid-October and Scott finds the surrounding countryside of Almería to be perfect for the epic.
For the lead of Moses, Deadline Hollywood is talking Christian Bale, with some on the inside saying Joel Edgerton might just play the part of Ramses, but nothing is confirmed as yet.
Scott is well-known for the film Alien (1979), and his best-known works are sci-fi classic Blade Runner (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), best picture Oscar-winner Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), Matchstick Men (2003), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Robin Hood (2010), and Prometheus (2012).
