Country duo Love and Theft is comprised of Eric Gunderson and Stephen Barker Liles. They garnered a 2013 Academy of Country Music (ACM) “Top Vocal Duo of the Year” nomination and their chart-topping single “Angel Eyes” was certified platinum.
Eric Gunderson took some time from their busy schedule to chat about their upcoming shows in New Jersey at Six Flags Great Adventure tomorrow and in New York next month as part of “Vets Rock,” as well as their current radio single “If You Ever Get Lonely.”
According to Eric, he stated, “That felt great, since it was my first hit as a songwriter and as an artist. It was definitely surreal and a bucket list moment for us. It really didn’t sink in for probably four or five months after it happened, especially when we received the No. 1 plaque. It was amazing.”
Love and Theft is expected to headline a show on August 16, at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey as part of Nash 94.7 FM’s “Salutes Service” country concert, where they will perform for the troops. “We are excited since we actually played there before and we are glad to come back. It’s always fun to play at a theme park and the venue is great. It’s going to be a really good time,” Eric said.
They will share the stage with such country artists as Austin Webb, Jaida Dreyer and Dakota Bradley. “We are excited to play with them and it’s going to be cool to see some of the new folks play their shows,” he said.
Next month, on September 7, Love and Theft will be a part of “Vets Rock,” where they will perform with Florida Georgia Line, Thompson Square, Joel Crouse and headliner Brantley Gilbert. “I am really excited about that show as well since all of my family from my father’s side is from that area,” he said. “We have known Florida Georgia Line for a really long time. They are good guys and I am thrilled for the success they have had over the last year. We were on tour with Brantley Gilbert all summer long with Tim McGraw, so we got to know him really well too. He’s a great guy and it’ll be fun to share the stage with all those guys,” Eric said.
On their latest single, the power-ballad “If You Ever Get Lonely,” which is making its way up the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts, Eric remarked, “We first heard the song a few years ago at a meeting for our new record and we thought it was awesome. I was looking it up on the Internet and I saw that John Waite was a writer on it and he also recorded it. We heard the production and it had an 80s feel to it and we updated the production a little bit. We didn’t want to do too much, since we enjoyed the simplicity of it. We did our best with it and it’s one of our favorite songs. Hopefully, it will be a huge song for us.”
Their new single is played consistently on the radio airwaves of Nash 94.7 FM in New York. “That’s awesome. They have been really good to us up there and it’s great to have a country station in New York City,” he said.
Eric shared that he has always loved learning. “I have been incredibly fortunate to be able to wake up every morning and write my own music and express myself through my lyrics and performances. I have that artistic freedom and that motivates me to work hard. I think I have one of the best jobs in the world and I don’t take that for granted.”
On balancing a family, fatherhood and a music career, he noted that it is extremely difficult, but he and his wife have learned how to prioritize things. “I think we have found a pretty good balance and I am learning every day how to balance the two. I try to be home as much as possible, and I am working as hard as I can to get the single up the charts,” he said.
Eric listed Shania Twain, as well as Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert as his dream female duet choices in country. “I have always been a big Shania Twain fan. I think she has a really cool voice and I think she took of chances with her records. That is definitely one of my dream duet choices,” he said.
