article imageInterview with Hayley Williams from Paramore: 'Self-titled Tour' Special

On August 7, I had the pleasure to interview Hayley Williams, the lead songstress from the acclaimed rock band Paramore. In addition to Hayley, the group is made up of bassist Jeremy Davis and Taylor York on lead guitar.
She opened up about their latest studio album, her favorite song on the record, her dream duet choices and their “Self-titled tour,” which includes a show at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Their “Paramore” album was released on April 5, via their record label, Fueled By Ramen, and it subsequently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts, becoming their first CD to accomplish this remarkable feature.
On their decision to name their latest studio album, “Paramore,” Hayley explained, “After going through some really difficult times as a band, the three of us just couldn’t believe what an amazing journey this album became for us. There is no other name that would have represented how important the album is for Paramore so we gave it our name. We were so in love with every song we completed.”
She continued, “To everyone who has picked up our album, thank you. It’s hard to believe but we have been doing this for about 10 years now and because of this record, we feel like we just got a fresh new start. Thank you to those of you who have stuck with us all this time. For those who are just joining the ride, we are psyched that you have come along and we will see you at the show.”
Although the rock sensation does not have a personal favorite song on the record, she selected “Daydreaming” as a special track since it has a lot of meaning and it is a song that people can relate to. “The song is just about dreaming up a different reality. Everyone has their Disney princess moments, even dudes, where they have one life that really is good and comfortable, but their heart is reaching for something else so they bust out in song about it,” she remarked.
Hayley noted that their forthcoming “Self-titled Tour” is going to be comprised of a brand new setlist, bigger production elements and hopefully, bigger crowds.
One of those tour stops is going to be at Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City. “We have been dreaming of this moment for so long. None of us can even believe it. That’s the place that we are basing all our entire show around. It has to be a show worthy of The Garden. If we can do that, then we’ll be a better band for it.”
Last year, in an interview that I did in-person with American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, he listed Hayley Williams as his dream female duet choice, and Hayley returned the compliment to him. “Phillip Phillips is rad,” she exclaimed. “I don’t follow American Idol at all really but one night I caught him performing on one of the final episodes and he impressed me.”
Hayley revealed that she would love to collaborate with Freddie Mercury, the late lead singer of Queen. “Don’t say Freddie is not possible since it can done with holograms,” she said.
She added that she loves Missy Elliott too. “She’s not a guy but she’s better. I have loved her production, voice, lyrics, sense of humor and fashion choices since I was a tiny girl,” Hayley said.
On August 11, Paramore performed their single “Still Into You” at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards and they took home the award for “Best Rock Group,” besting out such musical acts as The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons.
According to Hayley, her definition of the word success is as follows: “Coming home from a tour and still being able to understand that my family and my home are what make me who I am.” “I like simple things, you know? These include cooking a meal, going to the theatre, buying records at the store. I am not defined by bright lights or loud cheers. That’s just something that happened to the guys and me because we love music,” she shared.
