article imageDr. Gupta's sudden change of heart on medical marijuana

By Amanda Byas     Aug 11, 2013 in Health
The chief medical correspondent for CNN, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, reversed his long-standing opposition to medical marijuana on Thursday.
Dr. Gupta wrote:
“I am here to apologize. I didn’t look hard enough, until now. I didn't look back far enough! [Marijuana] doesn’t have a high potential for abuse and there are very legitimate medical applications. We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my role in that.”
The mea culpa is a shocking reversal for the prestigious doctor and journalist, who wrote an opposing marijuana article in the Time magazine in 2009.
His colleagues are praising Gupta’s for his sudden change of heart.
Gupta changed his mind about marijuana after completing thorough research for well over a year, while working on “Weed,” a documentary premiering Sunday.
Gupta says he spoke to health professionals, growers, and patients throughout the world, as well as reading many medical reports from the 1840s to the present.
