Washington - This past week a protest took place in front of ABC News in Washington. The group wanted to highlight what they see as media bias on the topic of abortion, saying both sides of the issue are not presented fairly.
On Aug. 8, 2013, a group of a protesters gathered outside ABC News' offices in Washington. According to InTheCapital, the event commenced at noon at the Farragut North offices.
Numbers in attendance were reported to be between 150 and a couple of hundred people.
Organized by Life Action, the activists handed out signs to passerby to "Stop Censoring the News" and called for the network to "tell the truth" regarding abortion.
The Washington Times reported Live Action sent letters of protest to ABC, NBC and CBS urging them to report "honest and factual reporting" about abortion.
"The media has flinched from the reality of abortion for decades," said Live Action President Lila Rose, according to the organization's website. "We call on the press to end the censorship of what abortion actually does to our smallest children and women, and end the lionizing of abortion advocates."
Live Action is the group that previously has gone undercover in Planned Parenthood clinics which sparked controversy. Critics said the videos were misleading.
Other attendees at Thursday's rally included Christian Robey, Political Director, Media Research Center, Jill Stanek, a nurse working to protect pre-born and post-born life, Charmaine Yoest, President of Americans United for Life and Ryan Bomberger, Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer, The Radiance Foundation.
In addition to the rally in Washington, an online Twitter rally was scheduled for those who wanted to, but could not attend the in-person rally. Organizers asked Twitter users to send tweets to the "big three" networks calling for an end to media bias.
"A change is long overdue for our big news distributors. It’s time for these networks to end their blackout of the truth on abortion – how it irreparably harms women, babies, and society,” said Rose.
According to Live Action, the Media Research Center conducted a study which found severe unbalanced reporting by mainstream media when it comes to how abortion is reported. The group provided a "small sample" on its website of what the research found.
One of the highlighted biases was the minimal reporting in mainstream media on abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell, who was on trial for the first degree murder of seven babies born alive during abortions and then subsequently killed. He was also charged with the death of an adult patient . Gosnell was later found guilty and sentenced to life.
Rose commented one of the most disturbing finds was media largely chose to ignore this barbaric case instead preferring to cover stories such as pro-choice Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis. Davis' name became widely known after her 12-hour filibuster earlier this year.
Do you think the media fairly covers both sides of the abortion issue?
