article imageInterview with country star Lee Brice: 'Parking Lot Party' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 9, 2013 in Entertainment
On August 8, I spoke via telephone with country music star Lee Brice about his latest single “Parking Lot Party,” his album “Hard 2 Love,” his upcoming “The Otherside” headlining tour, as well as his recent successes in the music industry.
His love ballad “A Woman Like You” was his first chart-topping single on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts and he dubbed that as an “awesome” experience. “That was our first number one and we have had two more after that, so we have been on a roll and we have been loving life,” he said.
One of his most heartfelt songs on his latest album is “I Drive Your Truck,” and Lee Brice noted that it chilled him to the bone the first time that he heard it since it made him think of his grandfather and other important folks in his life. “When I heard that song for the first time, I was looking for a fun party song to finish up my album, but the publishers wanted to play me one last song which wasn’t up-tempo. Once they played it for me, it made me feel as if I were a kid again listening to songs that moved me, and I knew that it was an extremely special song before it was even over. I knew that I wanted to record it as soon as I heard it,” the singer-songwriter explained.
Lee’s newest single “Parking Lot Party” sits at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts for the week of August 17, 2013. “We like to have fun at our shows and I wanted to make sure that people who know me from songs like ‘A Woman Like You’ and ‘Love Like Crazy’ and ‘I Drive Your Truck’ know that there is another side to me. This song is something fun that I wanted people to know where I am from. A lot of people can relate to it and it’s still rocking on the charts, so we are excited,” he said.
In “Parking Lot Party,” he makes an allusion to The Marshall Tucker Band’s signature song “Can’t You See.” “I used to play that song all the time, so it’s good to come back to your roots,” Lee said. “I am a big Marshall Tucker fan and I got to open up for them one time. I grew up listening to a few of their songs and I learned how to play their songs on guitar. That was my throwback.”
Although there is no video in the works for Lee and “Parking Lot Party,” he shared that he is working on a new album and he has been out on the road touring a great deal.
While he is really attached to every song on his “Hard 2 Love” album, Lee revealed that his favorite tune is the closing track “One More Day.” “It’s the last song on there and it’s a true song about myself and my family and it’s a tribute to my wife Sara for being patient with me for being away from home so much. It’s a real personal song and I had to put it on my album,” he said.
On his upcoming “The Otherside” tour, which is presented by the House of Blues, he remarked, “We have been out with Brad Paisley all year and we still have a lot more shows with Brad but we wanted to end our year by doing our own thing. I grew up in South Carolina and one of my favorite places to see a concert was at the House of Blues at Myrtle Beach, so I have been always been partial to them. We got a deal together so we are playing basically all of the major House of Blues venues through October and November. We are really excited about them.”
Tyler Farr is expected to share the stage with Lee on select dates of “The Otherside” tour. “We wanted somebody to come out with us and who better to that than my good friend Tyler Farr. He has that song ‘Redneck Crazy’ steaming up the charts, so it will be great to spend more time with my buddies. Tyler is an awesome guy and very talented,” he said.
He is very driven and he has dreamt of becoming a musician his entire life. “I am always grateful about the things that I have had. On top of that, I think about myself a few years ago digging ditches in 115 degree weather all day long and I could be doing that again if I wasn’t appreciative of what I have. Every day I get up, I am extremely thankful and I give it all I’ve got,” he said.
On July 11, 2013, Lee had the good fortune to perform and headline his own show at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury in Long Island, New York. “Westbury was awesome and we were trying to soak that in. It seems like every show keeps getting better and better. We honestly look at every night and we thank God that we are able to be doing what we are doing,” he said.
Lee stated that he is extremely proud to have been a part of Jerrod Niemann’s latest single “Only God Could Love You More.” “I co-wrote it with Jerrod who is a really good friend of mine and Jon Stone is another good friend. That song has a great story since Jon had that title and we had most of it written at my house, and a few months later Jerrod came to me and said that he had a new idea for the song and melody and we actually re-wrote it completely and the second time was the charm and it was just magic. Jerrod Niemann cut it perfectly. That song has been one of my favorites that I have ever been a part of,” he said.
One of his proudest professional moments involved playing the Grand Ole Opry stage and singing a new song that he co-wrote entitled “More Than A Memory,” which garnered him a standing ovation midway through the song at the Opry; moreover, that tune was subsequently recorded by his musical hero, Garth Brooks and it went on to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts, becoming the sole single in the history of the country charts to accomplish this milestone. “Garth was a huge influence on me growing up so all that was a big proud moment for me. There is something about the Opry that just humbles me every time,” he said.
This year, he was nominated for an Academy of Country Music (ACM) award for “New Artist of the Year” along with two equally talented and gifted musicians, Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes; furthermore, his single “A Woman Like You” was up for “Song of the Year” at the ACM awards. “That was cool to be recognized on top on all the other success that we are having. That was just the icing on top of the cake so we are thankful for that,” he said.
