article imageOp-Ed: ‘Racist’ crime in black and white

By Alexander Baron     Aug 9, 2013 in Crime
Bromley - Does every violent altercation need to be racially motivated nowadays? Apparently, if someone uses a racial epithet in anger.
The latest issue of News Shopper, the local freesheet for the London Borough of Bromley, reports the case of Marvin Waite who committed the horrendous crime of spitting at two police officers and the even more horrendous crime of racially abusing them. Waite of Selby Road, Anerley was said to have spat on the officers, racially abused them and to have said: ‘I will kill you son, f**k off you bitch.’
That phrase alone could have cost him dearly, but he was not charged with making threats to kill. He was also said to have uttered: "All white people should die.’”
Instead of sending him to the Crown Court where he could have received a very heavy sentence, District Judge Dean (not to be confused with Paula Deen) gave him two short prison sentences and suspended them both. So much for the racist criminal justice system.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Omar Chaparro is unlikely to be dealt with so leniently by the courts, probably because a knife in the ribs is regarded as more serious than a faceful of spit, even when the victim is not a police officer.
Chaparro is said to have confronted two men: one Hispanic and one black, then to have directed several racial slurs at the latter, challenged him to fight, drawn a knife and then stabbed the other man as he tried to intervene.
The motive for this (alleged) assault is not clear; race may have had something to do with it, but alcohol or something stronger was quite likely an aggravating factor.
