article imageInterview: Krewella talks 'Alive,' Electric Zoo and 'Get Wet' Special

On August 6, I had the good fortune to chat via telephone with Yasmine Yousaf from the hit electronic dance music trio Krewella.
The electronic group is made up of siblings Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf, as well as Kris Trindl (Rain Man), and they are signed to Columbia Records. “It’s amazing to be on there. It’s a great label and they have really honored our original ideas. They haven’t tried to change us and they have really respected us as artists,” she said.
On the electronic dance music scene, she remarked, “I love the energy and the fact that you can lose yourself in it. I have been a musician my entire life, but nothing has hit me like dance music. The fact that you can close your eyes and lose yourself is the most beautiful thing.”
Growing up, she noted that a major influence of hers was Kurt Cobain, the former lead singer of Nirvana. “I was a huge Nirvana fan and I love their raw passion and their honest lyrics that completely drove me insane. Although Kurt Cobain has died many years ago, his soul still lives in his music and that really captivates me,” she said.
Their single “Alive” was a smash hit, reaching No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, as well as No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts. It has also been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). “That feels very unreal since we wrote that song back in 2011. We were home because we didn’t get booked for a show, so we were really down that night. We were popping $5 champagne in our apartment in Chicago and we were just home making music and that song was born. It’s hard to believe that it has come that far since that moment that it was written,” she said.
Krewella is scheduled to appear at Electric Zoo in New York City, where they will perform on August 30 and September 1. “We played at Electric Zoo last year and it was mind-blowing that we were on the show on the same bill with a member of Swedish House Mafia. A year later, we are playing on one of the main stages which is insane for us and such an honor. We love our New York fans and our crew. We know tons of them by name and we are excited to see them,” Yasmine said.
On September 5, Krewella will launch their “Get Wet” tour in Austin, Texas, and one of those tour stops will be on October 29 in Syracuse, New York. “That’s going to be a fun stop and since it’s so close to Halloween, we will probably try and dress up too. You will be getting a full production and it’s going to be one of our biggest shows that we have ever done,” she said.
Their forthcoming studio album “Get Wet,” is going to be released on September 24. “It’s definitely a culmination of the past three years of our lives. We got a little deeper with the songwriting and the whole album is a journey. There is a song on there for when you are sad, angry and there is a song for every mood and the whole album takes on a journey,” Yasmine said.
Their latest single “Live for the Night” is already making its way up the charts. “When we finished the album we had to release a single off of it, and we didn’t know which one to choose from. It was a bit of struggle at first, since we all had our opinions, but we came up with ‘Live for the Night’ since it is harder and a grittier track than ‘Alive.’ We have a few songs like ‘Alive’ on the album, but we wanted to give people something different with the new single,” she said.
On their plans for the future, Yasmine revealed, “We are planning to thrive and to make new music. We have a bunch of remixes in store and we will be working with a few special collaborations that will be coming out. We are also working on our second studio album.”
Although they recently had a chance to release a song with DJ Nicky Romeo entitled “Legacy,” Yasmine noted that she would love to someday collaborate with Armin van Buuren and Netsky.
