article imageIP within US Senate edited Snowden Wikipedia to read 'traitor'

By Anne Sewell     Aug 4, 2013 in World
The description on Edward Snowden's Wikipedia page was edited by an anonymous source within the US Senate to read "American traitor" instead of "American dissident."
An extract from the original text on the Wikipedia page read "Edward Joseph Snowden is an American dissident."
It was picked up by Wikipedia that the page was anonymously edited and changed to read "Edward Joseph Snowden is an American traitor."
WikiLeaks also noticed the edit and sent the following tweet on Saturday:

The actual IP address used to make the edit was 156.33.241.5, and when visiting the page User_talk:156.33.241.5 it says that "This IP address, 156.33.241.5, is registered to United States Senate and may be shared by multiple users of a government agency or facility."
Further, by visiting Special:Contributions/156.33.241.5 and clicking on "GEOLOCATE" the IP will be traced back to the United States Senate.
Wikipedia states that by labeling someone as a traitor, this IP is pushing a strong POV (point of view) that clearly violates WP:BLP (Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons) and was done without consensus from other Wikipedia users.
However they do point out that this is not completely surprising as the IP is from the government -A1candidate (talk) 10:05, 3 August 2013 (UTC). Visiting that page tells us that this candidate is strongly considering retirement.
The Wikipedia page for Snowden appears to have returned to normal.
The various changes to the Wikipedia page can be viewed on this website.
