Doctor Who's new lead actor will be revealed live in a specially prepared half-hour programme this Sunday, the BBC has announced.
The decision to air a live broadcast was confirmed just after midnight, British time, following days of speculation that a BBC announcement on the actor chosen to play the Twelfth Doctor was imminent.
Last month, it was reported that, as with the announcement, four years ago, that unveiled Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, a special edition of the documentary show Doctor Who Confidential would reveal the person chosen to be the Twelfth Doctor.
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will be presented by Zoe Ball and will feature an interviews with the new Doctor, the current Doctor and Doctor Who's executive producer Steven Moffat.
"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," Moffat is quoted by BBC News. "For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."
The BBC's official announcement says that Ball "will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first-ever interview [with that person] in front of a live studio audience, set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the Tardis [sic]".
BBC Drama Controller Ben Stephenson told BBC Entertainment, "Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we've been using the codename Houdini as a decoy. It's the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor is on BBC One at 7 p.m. on 4 August, and will Tbe simulcast live on BBC America. It replaces a previously advertised edition of Celebrity Mastermind, which was used as a decoy in programme listings magazines.
In June, Smith announced his decision to leave Doctor Who. He will do so in December, having been in the role for four years.
The regeneration from the Eleventh to Twelfth Doctor is expected to happen in the closing moments of this year's Christmas special, which goes before cameras shortly.
Before that, Smith's penultimate episode – the Doctor Who 50th-anniversary feature-length special – will be broadcast in over 200 countries, all on the same day – Saturday, 23 November, in over 200 countries.
The special unites the Eleventh Doctor with David Tennant's Tenth, an "unspecified incarnation of the Doctor", to be played by John Hurt and possibly one other. Billy Piper will return as the Doctor's former companion Rose Tyler, alongside his current sidekick Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman). This extended TARDIS crew will be pitted against the Daleks and Zygons.
