article imageInterview with Nash Overstreet from Hot Chelle Rae Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 31, 2013 in Entertainment
On July 31, Nash Overstreet from the acclaimed pop-rock vocal group Hot Chelle Rae chatted with me via telephone about their new music and touring with Justin Bieber.
Hot Chelle Rae is comprised of lead singer Ryan Follesse, as well as Nash Overstreet on lead guitar and backing vocals, Ian Keaggy on bass and Jamie Follesse on drums. They have performed on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” in 2012, as well as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Live with Kelly!” “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and the “CBS Early Show”; moreover, they toured with such female mega-stars as Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato. “Touring with Demi Lovato was a blast. All of her shows were outside so it was hot and sweaty, but she was incredible. I would go out and watch her perform every night,” Nash said.
Nash noted that his influences range from Motown music to The Beatles to Michael Jackson.
This summer, they are a part of Justin Bieber’s “Believe” tour, which is presented by Motorola, and they will be opening for the pop superstar on August 2 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and sharing the stage with Cody Simpson. “This tour has been incredible, especially to sing for 20,000 to 30,000 people every night,” he exclaimed. “The Barclay Center concert is going to be crazy definitely. New York audiences are always the most energetic and loud crowds that we have.”
Their latest single “Hung Up” was produced by Andrew Goldstein, Dan Book and Alexei Misoul. Nash co-penned the new single with frontman Ryan Follesse, as well as Andrew Goldstein. “The people are loving the new single ‘Hung Up.’ It was a blast to work on the new album and we are almost ready to put it out,” he said. “It felt great for ‘Hung Up’ to go in the Top 35 on the Billboard Pop charts.”
Although the name of their forthcoming new album and new single are both still “to be announced,” Nash shared that Hot Chelle Rae is in the studio recording their new CD for RCA Records which is set for release later this year.
On July 19, 2012, they stopped by to visit the iconic Empire State Building in New York City, prior to their performance on “The Today Show” concert series. “That was cool and that was actually the very first time that I went to the Empire State Building. I feel bad since I should have gone there before that. It’s such an incredible landmark and a historical monument. It was really cool to be up there and take some pictures there,” he said.
In 2011, they were the recipients of the American Music Award for “Best New Artist,” thanks to the success of their sophomore album “Whatever” and their mega-smash hits “Tonight Tonight” and “I Like It Like That,” both of which have sold over 6 million units to date. “The first time we sold one million singles was a huge milestone for us and the American Music Awards win was massive,” he said. “I also remember the first time that we heard our song on the radio for the very first time. We were really excited since it doesn’t get any better than that.”
