article imagePeter Capaldi ‘current favourite’ to be the new Doctor Who

By Mathew Wace Peck     Jul 30, 2013 in Entertainment
Peter Capaldi has surged ahead in the polls, becoming the bookies’ favourite to succeed Matt Smith in the BBC’s popular long-running sci-fi drama.
A surge of bets have been taken at bookies in the UK after Doctor Who ’s showrunner, Steven Moffat commented that they were definitely considering an older actor to play the part of the Twelfth Doctor.
Smith, 30, is one of the youngest actors to have played the Doctor; and was the youngest actor ever to be cast in the role – he was 26 at the time. The search for the Twelfth Doctor was triggered at the beginning of June, when he announced his intention to quit. Come the end of 2013, he will have played the part of the Eleventh Doctor for four years.
Of the first eleven actors to have played the Doctor on TV, the late William Hartnell was the oldest one, at 55, to have been cast. However, at 55, too, Capaldi is the same age Hartnell was when he was became the First Doctor in 1963.
On choosing Smith’s successor, Moffat said, “We’ve never not considered an older Doctor. It is completely on all the lists we make- there are absolutely older Doctors.”
Up till now, Capaldi’s name wasn’t in the running. However, he is known to be a fan of the show and has talked in the past about liking the idea of playing the Doctor. In 2008, the Scottish actor actually appeared in an episode – The Fires of Pompeii – alongside david Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.
Joe Crilly – speaking to the Independent on behalf of William Hill, said: “Peter Capaldi was not even in our list a few days ago but he has been the subject of a lot of betting interest recently and this gamble would suggest that if he does not have the part already, he is almost certainly on the shortlist.”
Spin-Doctor Who
Capaldi is best known for playing the foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It and In the Loop.
Other actors to have been strongly linked with the role in the past few weeks have included Rory Kinnear and Sheridan Smith. Kinnear has since categorically denied that he’s up for the role. If Smith is cast, she will be the first-ever female actor to play the Doctor.
Doctor Who returns to television later this year for a number of special. The new Doctor is expected to be revealed sometime in the next few weeks, possibly in an edition of Doctor Who Confidential. The actual regeneration from Doctors Eleven to Twelve will take place in the Christmas episode.
