The iPhone 5S, also rumored as the iPhone 6 ,has yet to launch. While many are eagerly waiting for this launch, Apple may be revealing another surprise - a lower cost iPhone for those on a tight budget.
It currently goes by the name of 'iPhone 5C'. What does the 'C' stand for? Cheap, perhaps? This rumor originally surfaced as an image posted over on the Weiphone forum showing a manufacturer bin full of what looks to be the packaging box for this new iPhone selection.
Over at KnowYourMobile, Clare Hopping speculates that the plastic packaging box hints that the iPhone 5C will be made out of plastic instead of the traditional aluminum. As a result, this serves as a huge cost cut providing a lower retail price of the device.
In exchange, this will give Apple a boost up and better chance of competing in emerging economies where low cost communication still dominates. Furthermore, this will give Apple the opportunity to market to the lower income households providing a more affordable communication solution.
On another side, TechRadarUK and some AppleInsider staff hints that the 'C' actually stands for color. This, in contrast, is said to be more likely especially when taking a look at the new iPod Touch release in 2012.
The iPod Touch features the new color selection as seen below:

Judging by this change in the Touch, Apple may be following suit with the iPhone. Meanwhile, AppleInsider posted another image showing the backing of the hinted color customized iPhone:
While it remains uncertain as to whether these images are real manufacturer taken or fakes, both explanations have valid claims to support them. The anticipated iPhone release is hinted for the fall of 2013 and only then will we know for sure.
