The BBC reports the discovery of a new giant grey fungus, about 15 kilograms in weight and one meter in diameter, in a village in China's Jianshui County.
The video shows the new giant mushroom, with multiple caps attached at the base of their stems, that just surfaced to the attention of biologists as though from thin air.
China, it seems, never fails to live up to its billing from the Western perspective as the paragon of an exotic far, faraway land somewhere between here and planet Mars where you could still expect to read as a matter of course in the morning papers at breakfast table news of the latest alien life-form just discovered.
The fungus was discovered in Puxiong Town in China's Jianshui County, southwest Yunan province.
The discovery caused understandable excitement among locals. A woman snapping photos said: "I guess this mushroom can be entered into the Guinness World Records."
You'd wonder where a living thing that size has been hiding all the time.
Biologists are still scratching their heads over just what in China this is; and mushroom lovers can't wait — they are already asking whether it is safe to eat.
